OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS

An Opinion By Jan Bergemann

Published April 7, 2026

Dear Governor Ron DeSantis,

I hope that Tuesday’s Special Elections have shown you, and the Florida’s Republican Party, that Florida’s voters value their homes and condos a lot more than party affiliation.

And obviously some Republicans totally forget that more than 50% of all Florida voters live in some form of community association.

The members and supporters of our organization are furious that the actions of the Republican-led Senate killed all bills that would have helped Florida’s homeowners and condo owners.

Important reform bills were killed behind closed doors – bills that would have helped property owners in community associations.

HB 657 -- Representative Juan Carlos Porras: This bill would have helped owners dealing with many problems in HOAs, scams, embezzlement and the total lack of enforcement of existing laws. These problems are much more common than the so-called service-industry is willing to admit. See the latest example published this week – this time in Orlando.

SB 1498 -- Senator Jennifer Bradley: This bill contained many clarifications and important specifications to the bills she sponsored in past years.

SB 1706 -- Senator Jason Pizzo (My Safe Florida Condominium Pilot Program) -- a bill that would have helped many condo owners, especially retirees on limited income, to save their homes after the Senate (Jennifer Bradley) enacted the so-called Condo Safety Bills in past sessions, leaving condo owners with huge financial liabilities.

For more detailed info about all of these problems please read as well our BLOG from the past two weeks: EULOGY FOR HB 657 and 2026 LEGISLATIVE SESSION – A TOTAL DISASTER.

I urge you to consider talking to House and Senate Republicans in order to solve these serious problems, hoping to avoid further losses of House and Senate seats in the November elections. Due to the fact that House and Senate couldn’t come up with a budget and a property tax solution there will be minimum one special session necessary.

You have the ability to add owner-friendly community association bills to this session. It might really help Republican candidates in November. 108 House Representatives had already realized the necessity of passing community association reforms.

Thank you for listening to our concerns!

Warm Regards,

Jan Bergemann
