Taking pettiness to new heights

Considering the Florida attorney general entered the latest South Florida condo pettiness, you wonder who would get involved if they had a real problem. The Joint Chiefs of Staff? The pope? President Bush? Who knows.

This time, Attorney General Bill McCollum basically told the association at the Port Condominium in Fort Lauderdale: "Are you folks for real?"

This is the association that was telling Laurie Richter she couldn't keep her mezuzah -- all five inches of it -- on her condo's doorpost. It took lawyers on both sides and meetings and finally the AG to come to the conclusion that should have taken about five minutes: the mezuzah doesn't bother anybody except someone who is desperately trying to be offended. Richter and any resident who wants a mezuzah should be able to have one, and let's get on with life.

For the moment, common sense has prevailed in South Florida condos. For the moment.
