Firefighters racing to a blaze at Century Village in
Deerfield Beach found flames and black smoke coming from a second-floor
apartment where a woman in her 60s was discovered dead inside on Thursday
night, a county official said.
"Apparently the fire
had a good start before we were called," Broward Sheriff
Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said Friday about the
smoky conditions that drew about 24 firefighters and
paramedics.
The woman's identity was not available Friday. Homicide
detectives found her death was not from suspicious
circumstances, he said.
The cause of the fire that destroyed the unit in Building O
at 239 Newport is being investigated by the Broward Sheriff
Fire Marshals Bureau and the state's Bureau of Fire and
Arson Investigations, Jachles said. |

Firefighters were called at about 5:30 p.m. and the fire
was out about 15 minutes later, according to the spokesman.
Neighboring units in the complex that is south of West Hillsboro Boulevard
and west of South Military Trail were not damaged by fire, but two residents
sought the help of the American Red Cross. Those living in eight apartments
were displaced because they lost electric power.
Jachles said it was the first fire fatality for the county agency in 2017,
"and hopefully it will be the last. Most fires are preventable, with the use
of smoke alarms and sprinklers, and fire safety education."
