Eight years after buying the Twin Rivers community golf course in Oviedo, owners of the property are facing community opposition to their plans for building 186 single-family homes and 112 townhomes on land that includes parts of the golf course.

Del-Air Inc. founder Bob Dello Russo and American Builders Supply Inc. Chairman Chad Barton purchased the course for $2.3 million in 2006 under the name University Golf Club Inc., according to public records. The property sold for almost twice that amount in 1999.

The city of Oviedo is considering plans for the residential development, but residents have organized to oppose the development application. The course would remain at 18 holes, but with shorter fairways.

"Concerned residents cite flooding, congestion, traffic problems — including a new traffic signal on Lockwood Road — and environmental issues," said Christopher Cain, who moved to Twin Rivers as one of its first residents in 1987.

Mattamy Homes has a "confidential contractual relationship" with the golf course owners, said Brent Carey, director of communications for Mattamy. The builder supports the legal rights of all landowners, including University Golf Club and current homeowners, he said.

Carey said last week that Mattamy expects that "University Golf Club will work diligently to produce a win/win/win for the city of Oviedo, its citizens and for their investment in the Twin Rivers Golf Club."
