PORT ST. LUCIE — The firearm ban previously enforced in common areas in
Tradition is no longer in effect, according to Florida Attorney General James
Uthmeier.
|
In a Wednesday post on X, Uthmeier wrote,
"Tradition Community Association agreed to stop enforcing
its unlawful firearm ban in common areas."
He also told Florida residents who contacted him about their
HOAs trying to enforce firearm bans that he is aware of the
issue.
The announcement comes after a letter was sent to residents
of the Tradition community in Port St. Lucie stating that
carrying a firearm, whether openly or concealed, was not
permitted in the community. The letter from the Tradition
Community Association drew widespread criticism, with the
Port St. Lucie Police Department saying it would not enforce
the HOA policy.
On May 21, Uthmeier entered the controversy, saying the
association's ban on firearms in common areas violated state
law and could result in legal action.

Wednesday's announcement appears to resolve the dispute for
now, though Uthmeier said his office is continuing to work with the association
to ensure the policy change is permanent and complies with state law. |
