URGENT ALERT
IMPENDING VOTE ON STATE'S MEDICAID FUNDING
Posted May 14, 2003

You may be aware that Florida is experiencing a severe crisis in Medicaid funding.  All Medicaid programs are being scrutinized to determine what can be cut back or eliminated.  While scrutinizing is not a bad thing, cuts of any kind in present programs will seriously hurt Florida’s most vulnerable citizens.

More than 40 million citizens throughout American are served by Medicaid programs.  In Florida those programs include Medicaid Home and Community based Services Waiver Programs (54% of which are paid by federal dollars) and the Assisted Living Facility Medicaid Waiver program, both of which help seniors to remain in their homes and age in place, rather than being placed in a nursing home.

The United States Senate now has before it an important amendment to the tax bill presently being considered, proposed by Senators Collins and Rockefeller.  It is expected to be voted on in the next few days.

The proposed amendment will set aside $10 billion for Medicaid funds for the States.

If the amendment fails, there will surely be a drastic cut in Florida’s Medicaid programs so please call or e-mail Senators Graham and Nelson, ASAP, and ask them to VOTE YES on this amendment.
