The Fight For Association Reform Bills

HOAs need more rules, tighter leash

Re your May 29 editorial on home rules: As a homeowner who followed all the homeowner association rules and still had to hire an attorney to defend myself from non-judiciary foreclosure over illegal fines due to the color of a driveway, it is time to rein in the power of out-of-control HOA boards and their vicious, money-hungry attorneys.

After many interviews, I could not find a homeowner-friendly attorney in Palm Beach County and got an attorney from Broward. After three years I gave up, not because I was wrong but because I did not have an extra $18,000 to have my day in court.

I live in a rogue monarchy, not a democratic republic. The Constitution of the United States does not apply in HOAs. It is about time that freedom is restored to the millions in America who are oppressed by their HOA boards and money-hungry attorneys. No one wins in a conflict between a homeowner and their board except the attorneys!

I applaud all the efforts of state Rep. Julio Robaina of Miami. He is truly looking out for the rights of his constituents.

Too bad the rest of the legislators in Tallahassee forget who elected them when they sit down in committees and legislative sessions. Bills that start out homeowner friendly get transformed into homeowner nightmares. It is time Gov. Jeb Bush reminded the Legislature whom it represents: Florida citizens, not special interests.
