SUNRISE— Broward Circuit Court Judge Steven Feren, the former mayor of Sunrise, is under federal investigation, according to two sources with knowledge of the inquiry.

Federal agents served a subpoena at City Hall on Tuesday, seeking records regarding Feren and his efforts to purchase a condominium in the city.

Feren declined to comment Wednesday, saying he was attending a funeral.

Feren stepped down as Sunrise mayor in January 2009 after winning an election to the circuit bench.

In late 2008, Feren got his deposit returned from the Tao Sawgrass towers project in Sunrise after the economic turndown hit.

At the time, Feren told the Sun Sentinel he thought others also got refunds and that he didn't get special treatment. He said he got a refund about three months after sending a letter on his law firm stationery to the original owner. Feren said the condo was to be ready by February 2008 but was not finished in time, so the developer was in default on the contract.

As mayor, Feren voted in favor of the project before buying a unit at Tao. The 26-story twin towers on the edge of the Everglades remain largely empty.
