TEQUESTA — People who live at a building in Tequesta are out of their homes and trying to make arrangements about where to live after their building was evacuated.

The village deemed it "unsafe for occupancy" after columns showed "significant deterioration and cracking."

A statement from Mayor Molly Young says an Engineer of Record on a nearby project alerted the village’s building official to the unsafe building.

The address is 200 Waterway, just northeast of Tequesta Drive and U.S. 1.

The mayor wrote that the building official forwarded the concern to the homeowners’ association, which scheduled an onsite inspection with Tequesta’s fire chief.

After a visual examination, the building was deemed unsafe for occupancy.

People living there were evacuated. The mayor says they won’t be able to return until the necessary repairs are completed and then the property is inspected by a structural engineer.

The mayor adds, a Florida Department of Environmental Protection permit will be required for the project. Then, a village building permit can be issued.

For now, the HOA contracted with a local firm to immediately stabilize the building and provide the essential repairs. It's also trying to help residents with their relocation needs.

At this point, the timeframe for repairs is unknown until a complete analysis is done by a structural engineer.

The property has been fenced off and it will not be accessible to the public.
